Physical Therapy

a little girl raises her hands in excitementPhysical therapy helps people of all ages improve strength and mobility so that they can function in their lives.  In particular, physical therapists address difficulties with gross motor delays, movement dysfunction, and impaired postural control.

A girl plays with ElmoWhen working with children, physical therapists work to develop gross motor skills such as crawling, sitting, walking, stair climbing, jumping, climbing, ball skills and bike riding skills. Therapy uses play activities to improve strength, balance and coordination. Therapists also assess children for the need for braces, orthotics and adaptive equipment to aid in mobility.

A physical therapist will perform an initial evaluation to determine the child's areas of ability/strength and areas that need improvement. To improve the child's motor learning, activities are prescribed that the family can incorporate into their daily routine.

This helps the child generalize skills learned in therapy sessions to other "real life" situations.
